We are now just one week away from XUMA's 'HORROR EP' dropping, and what better way to get to know XUMA, than with a Q&A personalised to the EP and beyond. Let's get straight into it!
What inspired the concept behind this release?
"As honest as I can get, I simply had a handful of deep and dark tracks that were ready to be released and figured they all sounded like they could be in an EP!"
How did you approach the sound design in each song to make one song to the next stand out?
"Every track on the EP were all made at a certain point where I would make fun sound design sessions heavily inspired by the artist I was inspired by at the time. For example: “BLACK ROOM”, at the time, was heavily inspired by the slow and weighty characteristics heard in tracks by yvm3."
Were there any horror themes or influences that shaped the creation of this project?
"Not really, I just decided to make scary-sounding tracks on a whim and they conveniently turned out to be identical in characteristics and mixing."
One of three solo tracks, 'BENEATH BLOOD'.
How does the Horror EP compare to your previous work?
"It is definitely a lot darker in comparison to most of my other releases, and it’s the first time I’ve bundled multiple tracks together that are well-mixed and that I am proud of! (we ignore my older EP haha..)"
What was it like to work with both DEJA and Joshua Tu on this EP?
"I cannot express how much fun it was to work with two of my best friends on these tracks AND have them both on an EP ON Full Flex Audio. Working with DEJA was an extremely fun experience as we were both on a call swiftly working on the track. Working with Joshua Tu, while it was a more disconnected collaboration (we didn’t work during calls very often), was super interesting for me, as our track was a genre completely out of Joshua’s usual projects. I must say I’m extremely proud and happy for Joshua Tu for going out of his comfort zone AND absolutely killing it for this track!"
What do you want the listeners to take away from the Horror EP?
"Always try something new when making a fresh track! I experimented with darker tones and slower tempos for this EP, so I believe you can, too! Remember, your production level only goes up from here, never stop moving towards your potential."
XUMA and DEJA, with 'KETER'.
What’s next for XUMA after the Horror EP?
"I honestly have no clue. I’ve always done things out of convenience and sometimes spite. I’ve never followed a certain release schedule or have had any track goals throughout long periods of time. Every release I plan is always unique and drastically different from my last. However, I hope to begin playing shows sometime soon! I’ve been practicing using a deck for the first time so hopefully that gets me somewhere."
