Sui Generis: Volume 8 (Q&A!)

As SGV8 draws ever closer to its 12th of May release date, we asked some questions to artists that haven't featured on FFA before, to get to know them a bit better.

The artists featured on this Q&A are: NVR ME, Emplexx, Aukata and Myrmax!

SECTION 1: INTRO

This section is for each artist to dive into detail about their song. Share insights into your song, how long it took to complete the finished track, anything you think is necessary to describe your song.

NVR ME: I started the track itself in November last year, but the first brick came much earlier. I had a sound design session with a friend of mine where I just put random stuff through a granulator. The main sound in the drops is the result of that. I stumbled across the sounds I made in that session like 2 months later and thought that they were kinda cool. From there I build the rest of the track around the drop, which is not how I usually work. That is probably why this song had 20 different intros.

Emplexx: I started the song a year ago, messing around in the DAW and eventually stumbling upon something that sounds great, and then working on it in small bursts... the usual! This one started as me trying to flip A New Kind Of Love by Frou Frou. I have a habit of reusing projects that I know won't be turned into full songs for something else, trying to salvage the sounds I already made, this was one of such cases.

Aukata: The intro was made when I wrote the main chords. It’s quite empty and simple, so because of that further development of the track can be really surprising

Myrmax: The original idea was made when I participated in VildeButSobar’s Beat Battle. The Track took around one year to develop, and in search of some more “ dynamic creativity, “ I invited Yuga & Happy Soul to hop on the project.

SECTION 2: MAIN Q&A

  1. What inspired the creation of your song?

NVR ME: I mostly get my inspiration from friends that also make music. Hearing what they create pushes me trying to be just as good as them.

Emplexx: As I got the idea for the main drop down it kind of painted a picture of using a subway in my mind. Notably, the main dissonant lead, the flow of the bassline over a fast and steady beat, and the overall atmosphere. I tried to structure and write the rest of the song around that. When I got back to working on it this year, it was at the same time as I was playing on a Minecraft SMP I was invited to, and it had an entire work-in-progress metro system that would connect all player bases, with beautifully built stations (shoutout honabai), I think that greatly fuelled my inspiration for this song as well. Overall, the final version might not reflect that nearly as much as I ended up cutting down on some of what I wrote, but I think it still fits the vision overall.

Aukata: I’ve been listening to a lot of jazz music in the end of 2024, I always wanted to make a good jazzy track, so i had to improve my knowledge and skills.

Myrmax: At that point, I was trying something glitchy and experimental, it’s not that glitchy sounding anymore though, but yeah I was just messing around with the beat battle sample and my trusty Shaperbox.

  1. How does it feel to be a part of a mixed genres showcase release, like Sui Generis: Volume 8?

NVR ME: It’s such a good feeling to be honest. Especially for people that create genres that don’t fit that many labels. Also was pretty happy because it was the first time a label wrote to me first that they wanted my music on their comp.

Emplexx: I guess it feels like I have achieved something. I don't think any well known and respected underground label such as Full Flex Audio reached out to me previously, so this is a first for me!

Aukata: It feels really nice! the compilation feels really fresh, each track is different.

Myrmax: To be honest, it feels amazing to be part of a compilation in general, it feels like a collaboration in some perspective, like how every track from the compilation got the same vibe.

  1. Was there anything unique about the production process of this song?

NVR ME: I think the process behind the track was pretty unique. I usually always start with making an intro, then the drops sounds and drums after that. This time I started with the drop first, drums to be exactly. Was kind of struggling with working in that order but it was an experience for sure.

Emplexx: The tempo. I have never written a song like this at 140, it's always 128 for me!

Aukata: This was my first time programming trumpets hahaha. I’ve used SWAM plugins for that. Technically, these trumpets are synths that are really really close to the real ones. I think the result is good!

Myrmax: Hell yeah, I am super into Hypertrance right now and you can tell it after listening to the track, the arps, the snares, the fXs and especially the 3rd drop.

  1. As Sui Generis: Volume 8 is a mixed genres compilation, what would you label the track’s genre as? Or does the track defy genres?

NVR ME: I think I would label my track as Vapour Twitch. But I‘m not a big fan of the idea of genres. So call it whatever you want.

Emplexx: Complextro but fast? But then there's a prominent garage part in the intro, and a halftime switch-up at the end. So I don't know.

Aukata: I would label my track as “Alien Jazz with some IDM influences”

Myrmax: At this age of music, everything is hybrid, it’s always a lil bit of this and that. So, let’s call it Electronic, y2k cyber garage & Club-Trance.

  1. If you could collaborate with another artist on SGV8, who would you choose and why?

NVR ME: Any of them! As long as we can create something cool that we are both happy with I am open to work with anyone.

Emplexx: ecli. purely based on vibes.

Aukata: I’d collaborate with any of them. I don't care about the names, if i like the idea, i’d defo be up to work on that!

Myrmax: I’m open to collaborate with anyone as long as it matches the vibe and we all feel the same thing from the track, I got no name.
