Welcome to Full Flex Audio SØNATA! For those that don’t know about your style, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into the dubstep scene?
"Hi, my name is Jacob, also known as SØNATA. I am 16 and I’ve been producing music for about 4 years now. I actually didn’t get into the dubstep scene until late 2020. I used to listen to a lot of dubstep when I was a lot younger, but during the first few years of producing I mostly focused on making beats for rappers because I wanted to stick to the more popular stuff. As I went back into dubstep, I remember being fascinated by how far the genre has evolved as I was listening to more and more artists over time. This actually made me interested in making the genre itself, which led me to where I am today. I felt that dubstep music is the most enjoyable genre for me because most of the time it’s unpredictable and there’s so much variety in the music."
Is there a meaning behind your alias name?
"I’ve had a couple of name changes before but “SØNATA” actually originated from my last alias, “Dior Sonata.” I took “Dior” out of my name because it didn’t really represent anything and I felt that the name needed to be shortened, and yes, my name does actually have a meaning. I chose this name because sonatas have a lot of variety and I felt that using that as my name sort of correlates to the variety of my own music. The “Ø” is just for aesthetic purposes."
What advice would you give to upcoming artists in the dubstep scene, or music industry as a
whole, who are just starting out?
"My advice would be to turn off your computer, go outside, and touch some grass.
Just kidding, in all seriousness, don’t be afraid to imitate other artists as you’re staring out. I feel like once you are able to understand the various styles and techniques, eventually you’ll start to take them and turn it into something completely unique. I feel like imitating is the most effective when it comes to finding your own artistic signature. Also, Getting feedback from people is very crucial as well. Feedback kinda gives you a better insight of the small little details of your own music. You gotta let other people give their thoughts on your music. It’s how us musicians improve overtime."
What can the listeners expect from your single, 'Vengeance'?
"A bunch of loud noises thrown at your face."
What are your favourite plugins for music production?
"Apparently my favorite additive synthesis plug-ins are Vital and Harmor. As for post processing, I’d say Echobode, Saturn 2, and of course, OTT."
Do you have any other hobbies, besides music production?
"I usually play guitar whenever I'm bored, but other than that, not really."
SØNATA, would you rather...
Lose the ability to speak or the ability to hear for the rest of your life?
Answer: "Ability to speak. I feel like a lot of people would choose that option. I wouldn’t
say I'm a very talkative person, so losing the ability to speak would be much of a problem
for me. As for losing the ability to hear, life would really suck, especially as a person who
is truly passionate about music, like how would I be able to make a good track without
hearing anything?"
Would you rather have super strength or have X-ray vision?
Answer: "Super strength. I mean, who doesn’t wanna become a real life hulk. X-ray is a cool
ability to have but in my opinion I feel like carrying 5 dump trucks is more fun than seeing
someone’s insides."
Would you rather have the only beverage you can drink be water, or the only food you can eat is salad?
Answer: "I’d say the first option. I don’t think I'll go insane just drinking water, because I'm still able to eat whatever I want in order to compensate for only drinking one beverage,
and of course, water is good for you. As for salads, I love them, but only eating salads would
literally make me go insane."
SØNATA's latest single 'Vengeance' drops on all stores and streaming services tomorrow. Get ready for this fun blast of a track!
